Global to Local Transitions, Challenges, and Opportunities: Strengthening Organizations and Enhancing Relationships

Public sector executives, managers, and leaders are impacted by both global and local issues that drive change and demand creative approaches.  In today’s world, the achievement of an organization’s mission may depend upon the willingness and ability to identify, confront, and address a unique set of challenges and opportunities.  This session provides strategic information and highly interactive dialogue to enrich and expand individual perspectives on today’s real world.  Issues covered include social dynamics, the economy, leadership, media, resources, technology, risk management, and the inherent power derived from addressing reality! Participants are encouraged to find new and/or creative ways to collaborate, with each other, in pursuit of survival, sustainability, and excellence!

Good to Great:  When Good is Not Good Enough

We live in challenging times.  Fiscal pressures, human resources challenges, public expectations, and uncertainty are the topics of many conversations, in government organizations.  We strive to do more with less and may experience frustration, in the ongoing quest to provide premier services to our constituents and customers.  What makes some organizations able to beat the odds, confront the challenges and identify opportunities?  This session focuses on the seminal work of Jim Collins, with a special emphasis on the government sector, as participants explore pursuing ‘great’ as opposed to settling for just ‘good.’  Participants will examine the components of greatness and explore ways in which they can assist their organizations in moving forward with greater certainty, in uncertain times.

Full Cycle Talent Management

An organization’s success is primarily a function of talented people making excellent decisions, seizing opportunities, and dealing effectively with others.  While streamlined processes, comprehensive policies, and advanced web-enabled services are important, organizations are realizing their ability to serve and thrive is determined extensively by their people.  This presentation provides systematic and proven approaches to acquire and retain the right human capital necessary to strengthen the public sector.  Topics discussed will include job design, recruiting, selection, ‘onboarding’, development, retention, and performance measurement and management.

Ethical Influence:  The Art, Science, and Practice

The ability to influence others is not about the use of force.  It is about offering others a vision of what can be that may be a vast improvement over current reality.  In public organizations, behavior can be mandated.  Rules exist.  They are supposed to be a means to an end – and that end is impactful public service. What may be missing is the overt willingness to cooperate or even be open to other strategies and approaches on the part of both internal and external customers and stakeholders.  It is the effective utilization of influence which can often make the difference.  This session focuses on a broad understanding of the elements of ethical influence, their value, and strategy development opportunities for transferring information into useful application.

Collaborative Communication

The ability to communicate and work together effectively takes more than just desire.  It requires an understanding of what people value, the amount and type of information they need to productively engage, and a sincere commitment to developing strategies that maximize communication opportunities and enhance collaboration.  This session provides the personal, group, and organizational insights to make collaborative communication an integral part of daily life.  The role and impact of technology on effective communication will be highlighted.

Public Policy: The Elected Officials’ Perspective

Policy has been defined as a deliberate plan of action to guide decisions and achieve rational outcomes.  In the public sector, elected officials are charged with crafting public policy that is intended to reflect generally accepted societal norms and values.  Administrators, managers, and staff are responsible for the implementation of policy.  What is often missing is a clear understanding and appreciation of the roles, perspectives, and responsibilities connected to both the development and application of policy.  During this session, participants will explore contemporary trends in government; compare political and administrative values and perspectives; weigh the impact of community engagement on the political process; consider future trends; and identify strategies for translating and aligning political and administrative roles.

The Evolving Role of Public/Private Partnerships

The dynamic economic, political, and social environments, in which we live and operate, require exploration of new perspectives and approaches that will effectively meet public needs.  Integrated Public Private Partnerships can be of assistance as governments seek to reduce costs, accelerate service delivery, create jobs and transfer risks to the private sector.  Such partnerships offer an opportunity for a government service or venture that is funded and operated through a partnership between government and one or more private entities or nonprofit organizations.  This session explores six key issues in partnering utilizing the IP (3) process and provides leaders, from all three sectors, a chance for critical, open dialogue to explore the challenges and opportunities of this unique public/private partnership methodology.

The Dynamics of Ethics and Integrity in Public Service

Guiding principles, values, and soundness of moral character are the hallmarks of ethical behavior.  Public sector leaders and managers have both personal and organizational responsibilities to develop, maintain, and model ethics, in word and action.  The call to public service is unique and the responsibilities that accompany that call are significant.  Maintaining public confidence commands us to continuously review and discuss ethical standards and practices.  This session focuses on ethical behavior, professional commitment, and an opportunity to develop meaningful strategies for identifying and addressing complex ethical challenges, in all areas of government.
