Aligning Performance Measurement to Mission, Goals, and Strategy
Despite organizational challenges in budgets and staff, public managers are under constant scrutiny to deliver results. In response to this pressure to produce, the most effective managers have a clear focus on what matters most to organizational success. They are able to engage their employees in defining, and clarifying, mission-critical outcomes and track success with meaningful performance measures.
These critical measures can simplify performance at all levels of the agency and can help reveal both service gaps and service excellence. Performance measures can also help the organization focus on fulfilling its mission by fostering a shared understanding of expectations by customers, stakeholders, and employees throughout the organization.
